Something that never fails to make me happy is overcoming a fear of trying something new. Behold these leggings I sewed up for G (Kwik Sew 3476).
That's not my felicity, even though I am really happy with them. Look closely at those leggings. Notice anything?
I overcame my fear of twin needles! As is the case with many fears, this one was firmly rooted in ignorance - I simply hadn't figured out how to use one, and I hadn't educated myself on the many uses of such a delightful little notion. A little googling and I'd rectified both situations (tutorial). Twin needles are fantastic for sewing knits because they create a straight seam that can stretch. Ta daaaaah! Happiness!
I'm impressed with all your knit sewing. I have to confess that knits make me anxious still!
ReplyDeleteI'm with Amy ~ I've done very little knit sewing with bad results. Your legging look great!
ReplyDeleteOh cool, I have never used the twin needle either, I have never had a need. One day I will make some t-shirts maybe and then it would work.
ReplyDeleteI love working with knits and aren't twin needles amazing?
ReplyDeleteIt's always a great feeling, overcoming an obstacle! Hurrah for you for making an awesome pair of leggings for your little one! :)
ReplyDeleteGood job! Maybe one day I'll get over my fear of FMQ
ReplyDeleteVery cool! I've been sewing for decades (made mostly clothes for much of that time), and I have yet to use a twin needle! I usually use my serger for knits, but may have to try a double needle next time for the hem. I usually use a zig zag or if you stretch the fabric as you sew a straight stitch, it'll stretch when worn, but sometimes can give it a pucker... With our active family, I've made lots of knit and fleece clothes! Way to go!
ReplyDeleteThey look great! The timing of this post couldn't have been better. I have a pattern I want to try, a pile of knit fabric and I've been hesitant… This might be the boost I need!
ReplyDeleteLooks great! I just tried my twin needles last night (I've used them before) and the knit was so fine that I need a smaller needle. So I need to shop for that before trying again.
ReplyDeleteWay to go! I've always wanted to try twin-needle quilting (you get a zigzag on the back, but so what). At least in a grid pattern for placemats, right? I should try it!
ReplyDeleteyay! good for you! aren't twin neeedles awesome? i wish they weren't so expensive, i'd use them on everything.
ReplyDeletei did a post about them a while ago, maybe for one of my first Felicities posts? i linked to some other ways to use them in that post.
